Role: Level Designer
Engine: Unity
My time working on Snapshot Isle was spent designing and iterating on its open world, focusing on trying to create beautiful sightlines for players to take photos

Responsibilities
Documentation
Creating & keeping the confluence level design document up to date.
Research
Looking into different islands & their layout as well as different campgrounds.
Greyboxing
Create a rough block out of the island using unity terrain system and primitives
Iterating
constantly updating the world based on user feedback from playtests
Level Creation
Greybox
Greyboxing
Using the terrain system within unity I blocked out the rough layout of the island.
I used pro builder to construct all of the different structures that would be on the island
This was then done for the other two islands
Iteration
After testing the first island we found players had a harder time identifying where they were when on the right side of the map.
I then moved the RV and Archery area over to that side to create a landmark in that area for players to be able to get their bearings
Iteration
Final Product
Within the next iteration, we decided that we would cut our 3rd island from the game and instead further populate the first 2 islands more
An observatory was added to the first island as well as more NPC's and the dock was moved to the second island.
Final Island
Second Island
The second island was developed alongside the first and is the first area that players encounter
Island Third (Cut)
Unfortunately, the third island never got to be fully built as it was cut before we got to build it out further

Takeaways
Metrics
When working in an open world it is important to set out your metrics from the start, to ensure that everything stays consistent.
Sightlines
I would constantly be having to test while creating the world to make sure there were sightlines to the landmarks so players could get their bearings.
